The sport of basketball needs a serious refresh, according to NBA commissioner Adam Silver who is contemplating radical changes to keep the game relevant to new generations and a global audience. One of his ‘radical’ ideas is to introduce tournaments during the NBA’s regular season – a concept borrowed from the world of soccer.
Kudos to Mr. Silver for understanding that a sport, just like a business, needs to continuously explore its boundaries in order to stay connected with its audience, and some of the best ideas can be borrowed from elsewhere. After all, basketball was invented in the late nineteenth century by a Canadian teacher through the oxymoronic combination of a peach basket and a soccer ball.
